We’re continuing to explore themes that fall under our word of the year, adaptation. July’s theme is "misfortune” and the variety of ways that we as humans can respond to it. We chose this topic to explore because of the streak of major bad luck we are hearing about moving through the lives of many of our clients (and our own lives as well). In this newsletter, we’ll explore the different ways we might interpret the chaos of the world around us, and how this impacts meaning making, acceptance, and sense of self. p.s. Taste of Minnesota: The Nicollet Mall downtown Minneapolis will be transformed into a “mainstreet” for this festival, described as a “two-day smorgasbord of food and fun (that) celebrates everything we love about Minnesota: great music, fabulous food, outdoor family fun, a few surprises and really great people-watching!” (July 6/7, 11am-8pm - RSVP for free tix) We can’t stop listening to Chappell Roan, so it seems only right to share about this Flip Phone hosted Pink Pony Club Dance Party in Saint Paul. (July 13th, 9pm - $20)

When suddenly something unexpected is thrown our way, how do we integrate it? The language we use to make sense of the twists and turns life presents us has the ability to profoundly impact our view of self and of the world around us. Consider two scenarios: in one, you find an envelope with several hundred-dollar bills. |

Which of the following words might you use to describe this event? Randomness, fortune, chance, luck, fate, manifestation, destiny? Now what if the unexpected event does not (immediately or obviously) benefit us? If we take a step on seemingly sturdy ground and land on a covered-up hole, resulting in a twisted ankle, how does the chosen word from the list above impact our view of control, agency, or meaning?

When suddenly an opportunity is revealed, we may be inclined to believe we made it so ("Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune"). C.G. Jung’s exploration of acausal connections, or synchronicity, suggests that within an expanded view on consciousness we find the locus of unpredictable moments of meaningful coincidence inside the psyche. However, if we over-attribute negative occurrences to these same forces (for example, understanding the twisted ankle as a punishment for past wrongs, or racking our brain for some way to chastise ourselves for not “knowing better”), we may maintain some sense of control or meaning at the expense of resilience or acceptance.
