The Park

Welcome to our fourth and final seasonal zine! We may occasionally publish themed zines in the future but it will be more sporadic and less tied to the time of year than our work over the past four seasons. We end our journey with summer, which is typically a slightly easier time of year for people who enjoy sunshine and find their mood lifted by warm weather.

However, we’ve noticed that there is a darkness to this summer. For many of us, the change of season hasn’t brought as much relief and comfort as it sometimes does. Life can be challenging, even in the most beautiful of seasons. In the midst of hard times, we may find ourselves longing for the summers of childhood, when things felt simpler and the world felt a little brighter.

Super Bloom: Part 2 - Blossom

Welcome to part 2 of our spring zine! The sun is coming around more often, the flowers are beginning to poke through the snow, and some of us are beginning to feel awake again; Persephone is rising.

If you’re still in dormant-mode though, that’s ok! Wait on engaging with this zine until you’re feeling ready to emerge from your rest. If you’re starting to feel your energy come back a little, or wanting to find ways to move forward into the new season, this is for you.

Super Bloom: Part 1 - Dormant

“A superbloom is a rare desert botanical phenomenon in which an unusually high proportion of wildflowers whose seeds have lain dormant in the desert soil germinate and blossom at roughly the same time.”

Though often overlooked and admittedly less outwardly impressive, this period of dormancy is just as important and beautiful as the resulting mass blossoming. This collective experience of retreat, rest, and quiet growth is a necessary experience, both for these flowers and for us as humans.

Self Mythology: Part 2 - Paracosm

Welcome back to part two of our winter zine! In part one, we discussed the ways in which winter is a perfect time for turning inward. We used fairy tales and myths as vehicles for understanding ourselves and the narratives of our lives.

In part two, we’ll be exploring the therapeutic benefits of “paracosms.” A paracosm is a detailed imaginary world that a person builds in their own mind. Oftentimes, children do this inner world-building organically, but we may benefit from continuing this practice into adulthood as well. Read on for ideas about how to engage in this practice to connect with personal symbols, work through inner conflicts, and find the answers that are already inside you.

Self Mythology: Part 1 - Myths and Fairy Tales

Winter is a season for turning inward. When it is too cold to comfortably be outside, we retreat into our houses and invest in making them as cozy as possible. In this winter zine we’ll be exploring ways to retreat even deeper, into ourselves and into our imaginations, as a way to locate meaning and purpose through self-connection during the cold, dark months of the year.

Haunted Haus: Part 4 - Halloween

Throughout the last few weeks, in parts one through three of our Haunted Haus zine, we have framed the liminality of this season as an opportunity to move through time and dimensions. We’ve explored nostalgia, inner child work, and the ghosts of painful emotions. We’ve pulled back the veil within our own consciousness to engage in shadow work. Now, with Halloween just a few days away, we’ll explore other therapeutic uses of this liminal time.

Haunted Haus: Part 3 - Burial and Release

Burying things when they are ready is like planting a seed, creating a powerful and rooted network of integrated support for yourself. This network grows and grows and then blooms, blossoms, releases, and pollinates everything around it.

Burying things before they are ready is like burying a zombie and hoping it stays underground.

Haunted Haus: Part 2 - Ghosts

Picture this: your body is a house. What kind of house? A creaky Victorian? Or maybe a cottage in the woods? Are you an A-frame home? A rambler?

Imagine the rooms within you. In which ones do you feel most comfortable? Are there some that you never visit?

When you see something out of the corner of your eye, do you turn and look or do you avert your gaze? For now, let’s look.

It’s a ghost.

Haunted Haus: Part 1 - Nostalgia

It is October, spooky season, and soon crunchy leaves and early nights will be upon us! This is a liminal time, when the veil between our reality and the Otherworld is thin. If this season allows spirits and other energies to boundary-hop, perhaps we too can use this time to take ourselves through a portal and into another land.
